W.A. "Cam" Camwell was one of the most active railway enthusiasts during the 1950s & 60s, the period during which British Rail ways moved from steam to diesel and electric traction and many railway lines and branches passed into history. His membership of the Stephenson Locomotive Society led him to organise many tours of threatened or interesting railway lines and he recorded as much of the network as possible both in photographs and on 16mm cine film. The latter forms the basis of this series as Cam filmed many remote and obscure lines, as well as interesting developments, on the main lines.

Volume 7: Southern England and East Anglia

'Cam' takes in the south, starting in the china clay district at Chasewater and Fowey as well as visiting the Beattie Well Tanks at Wadebridge. At Plymouth a 45xx heads an inspection saloon and we see a T9 and a "Warships" in close proximity.. We visit the Forest of Dean lines, Bristol, Witney and Lamborne before seeing Southern action around Brockenhurst, Winchester and Eastleigh. Locomotives include MNs, WCs, M7s, N15s and N15x. At Romsey an L class mixes with M7s and GWR locomotives and the Meon Valley and Ryde Pier Head merit our attention before we plunge into Sussex at Steyning, Slinfold, East Grinstead and Midhurst with Brighton tanks a-plenty and C2Xs, plus the Bluebell's 'Sulky Service'. Further east we go to Canterbury East, Goudhurst and Warden to see "Schools" and H class tanks. Leaving Southern metals we go across London to King's Cross shed to see A4s and A1s then watch them climb through Copenhagen Fields and out of Gasworks Tunnel, sparkling along the main line to Potter's Bar. Diesels are seen at Marylebone and Bletchley before we go to the Fens around Peterborough, ending up with D16s at King's Lynn. Truly a "royal" spread of activity.
