The 'Cam' Camwell Collection W.A. 'Cam' Camwell was one of the most active members of the railway enthusiast community during the 1950s and 1960s - the period during which British Railways moved from steam to diesel and electric traction and many railway lines and branches passed into history.

His membership of the Stephenson Locomotive Society led him to organising many tours of threatened or interesting railway lines and he enthusiastically recorded as much of the railway network as possible, both in photographs and on 16mm cine film. The latter forms the basis of this series of programmes, as 'Cam' filmed many remote and obscure lines as well as interesting developments on the main lines.

Volume 1: Railways of the English Midlands

'Cam' lived in Birmingham, so his interest in his local lines gave rise to a vast archive of footage in his home region. This encompasses such delights as LMS Pacifics working on ex-Great Western metals around Wolverhampton in 1956 and intensive Western activity near the end of the GWR main line through Birmingham in the 1960s. Midland activity on the famous Lickey Bank - including 'Big Bertha' - features tests to see what were the maximum loads one locomotive could take up the bank unaided, and another test was on the Severn Bridge, with coupled 'Castles'. Rugby Central is a long-lost main line station where we see a huge variety of locomotives including LMS and BR class 5s, 9Fs, a 'Hall', a B1 and a V2. On the 'little lines' we see rail tours and regular traffic on the services around Dudley, featuring old LNWR tank engines and LMS Fowler and Stanier machines. A trek across the south-east corner of the Black Country has a Midland 2F going to Longbridge and another long lost line seen is the famous Cromford and High Peak line. These are just some of the locomotives and lines covered in this programme! DVD Extras: 'Cam's' Irish Mainlines including Wexford waterfront and Rosslare Harbour.

Vol.2: Wales and North West England

'Cam's' activities spread all across the British Railways network - and beyond. In Wales the many cross-country lines served rural communities and in South Wales the lines built to take coal out of the Valleys also provided vital passenger services. Of course, main lines feature too, including the South Wales Main Line, and the Settle and Carlisle. But for many the highlights will be the lost lines - such as the 'Little North Western', the Silloth branch, Afon Wen to Caernarfon, Three Cocks Junction to Moat Lane Junction, Bala to Ffestiniog and many more. Locomotives seen include LNWR 'Super Ds', 'Dukedogs', L&Y Barton Wright Saddle Tanks, and Furness 0-6-0s. These are just some of the locomotives and lines covered in this programme! DVD Extras: 'Cam's' British Narrow Gauge, including the Dinorwic Quarries and Padarn Railway, and Isle of Man Railways.

Vol.3: Railways of East Anglia and South East England

The South of England was dominated by the Southern and Western Regions of British Railways, but "Cam's" coverage of this part of the country includes visits to East Anglia as well. From Cambridge to Dover, on to Southampton and the Isle-of-Wight then along the coast to Devon and Cornwall he visited and filmed many railways which have changed or disappeared altogether including the Framlingham branch, the Midland and Great Northern, Canterbury and Whitstable Railway, the Hayling Island branch, Island lines to Freshwater and Cowes, the Somerset & Dorset, the Lyme Regis branch, the Kingsbridge branch, lines around Newquay - most featuring many locomotives which traced their ancestry back to the pre-Grouping Companies such as Adams's O2 0-4-4Ts, Dean Goods, a "Star", S & D 7F 2-8-0s, LBSCR D3 0-4-4Ts. More modern ones such as "Kings, "Castles" and Bulleid Pacifics also get a look in. These are just some of the locomotives covered in this volume.

Vol.5: The English Midlands Homelands

Living in Birmingham Cam recorded many events and everyday workings in the 'Heart of England'. Few escaped his camera, and here we see many workings on the old Great Western route through the city, including 'Kings' and a 'Saint' and at Snow Hill station and 'train - spotting' sequences at West Bromwich and Handsworth with Black 5s, 'Halls', 'Brits' and a myriad of Western tanks.

The old North Western lines came in for equal attention, the changes pursuant to modernisation including a number of early diesels around some of the avoiding lines as well as 'Super Ds' on goods and 2-4-2 tanks on motor services.

Further afield Cam recorded the Fowler 2-6-4 tanks on the 'Lickey Avoiding Line' through Redditch and Evesham and returned to the famous Cromford and High Peak Railway for a ride in open wagons behind the 'Austerities' which had replaced the old North London tanks.

To the east Cam recorded the Leamington to Rugby branch and a Johnson 0-4-4 tank on motor stock. Other highlights include the Stroud 'Golden Valley' line, the Dursley branch, visits to Round Oak steelworks, Bescot shed and Wolverton Works (with its LNWR 'Special Tanks'), a 56xx on the traverser at Moor Street and many more.

Volume 6 North West England and Wales Starting with 46201 in Carlisle Cam brings us footage of railways from the western side of the country. A quick return to the Stainmore line is followed by a record of the lines around South - port and Blackpool including the old L&Y engines used to provide steam heating at Central station.

The Amlwch branch is seen from the train and then a visit to the Caernarfon line takes us to Pwhelli. A brief visit to the Festiniog in 1955 and the Snowdon Mountain Railway is followed by the early days of preservation at Welshpool, whilst GWR tanks around the Wrexham area. We follow the Central Wales line through Knighton and Llandrindod Wells where we see 'Super Ds' at work and then explore many of the famous 'Valley' lines in South Wales, the emphasis this time being on the Swansea area including the famous Mumbles Railway and the LMS lines, both Midland and LNWR, to the town. Various mid 1950s railtours explored the dense net - works around the Valleys and we even cross the famous Crumlin Viaduct. Many more lines are covered in this volume.

Volume 7: Southern England and East Anglia

'Cam' takes in the south, starting in the china clay district at Chasewater and Fowey as well as visiting the Beattie Well Tanks at Wadebridge. At Plymouth a 45xx heads an inspection saloon and we see a T9 and a "Warships" in close proximity.. We visit the Forest of Dean lines, Bristol, Witney and Lamborne before seeing Southern action around Brockenhurst, Winchester and Eastleigh. Locomotives include MNs, WCs, M7s, N15s and N15x. At Romsey an L class mixes with M7s and GWR locomotives and the Meon Valley and Ryde Pier Head merit our attention before we plunge into Sussex at Steyning, Slinfold, East Grinstead and Midhurst with Brighton tanks a-plenty and C2Xs, plus the Bluebell's 'Sulky Service'. Further east we go to Canterbury East, Goudhurst and Warden to see "Schools" and H class tanks. Leaving Southern metals we go across London to King's Cross shed to see A4s and A1s then watch them climb through Copenhagen Fields and out of Gasworks Tunnel, sparkling along the main line to Potter's Bar. Diesels are seen at Marylebone and Bletchley before we go to the Fens around Peterborough, ending up with D16s at King's Lynn. Truly a "royal" spread of activity.

Volume 9: Cam in Colour

In the 1950s and 1960s colour film stock was often both difficult to acquire and expensive when that was possible. Thus 'Cam' reserved his use of expensive colour film for scenes which he deemed to be the most interesting .

This volume includes an A3 on a 3-coach train in the mid 1950s, banking by a GW 'Heavy Freight' tank at Ledbury, 'Gordon Highlander' and the 'Jones Goods', K4 2-6-0 61995 at Crianlarich, the J72 tank at York in North Eastern green, GW classes at Whitland, Cardigan, Aberavon, Nantybwch and Risca, and 4-4-0s, 0-6-0s and 0-6-2Ts around Stamford.

In Ireland the Tralee and Dingwall Railway, a horse-worked tram and main line locomotives in normal service.

Bonus footage:- A special tribute to the man himself, 'Cam' Camwell.
