Chemin de fer de La Mure

Chemin de fer de La Mure

Ref: CM107D

Price:£18.25

The CF de la Mure is metre gauge and electrified at 2400 volts DC. Built in 1888 as a coal line, it switched to tourism for its main traffic when the mines closed fn 1998. The line runs from St. Georges de Commiers, 20km south of Grenoble in southern France, to La Mure, in the foothills of the French Alps.

The line traverses the spectacular gorge of the river Drac on ledges, viaducts, bridges and tunnels high above the water. These are seen in footage from across the gorge and on the train, Numerous sharp curves and tunneis punctuate the route.

At Loulla, the line traverses two adjacent viaducts, one above the other and parallel to it. Abandoned coal mines can be seen at la Motte d'Aveillans (where there Is a mining museum) and around Le Villaret.

The original (and present) terminus at La Mure is situated in pleasant Alpine scenery. An an unprofitable 3km extension to Corps, opened in 1932, was closed in 1949; a further 48km extension to Gap waa never completed.

This volume was recorded in May 2000 using a 3-CCD Mini-DV camera, All editing and processing has been digital, The 16-bit sound was recorded on location using professional quality microphones, There is no dubbed-in "music", only live birdsong heard while recording. The extensive narration is confined to the maps and the stills so that the sound of the trains is unmarred.

Further information is on the printed insert and a pdf file on the disk.

Starring small steam locomotives worked to their limits!

Almost certainly Rob & Yuehong Dickinson’s last China film, this was very largely shot on the narrow gauge Huanan Coal Railway in the north of China, just 150 kms from the Russian Border. Once a typical forestry railway, when the area was logged out the line was retained to transport coal from several small coalmines about 50km east of Huanan. While the lower half of the railway crossed open countryside, the top half had a stiff climb to a summit followed by a steep descent. Returning loaded trains were banked by the locomotive from the next outbound train, an operation both rare and spectacular. With two extended visits timed to coincide with the autumn colours and concentrating on the top section, the result is a special record of the railway at a time when it was still operating fully. Inevitably decline followed and final closure came in 2011.

The Dahuichang Limestone Railway was situated to the south-west of Beijing and carried limestone for use in Capital Iron and Steel’s plant not far away. Just over one kilometre long, it was double track and intensively worked, albeit usually only in the afternoons. As the ‘main feature’ is shorter than usual, we have added coverage of this line. It closed in 2005 and Locomotive No. 4, seen here, has since been exported to the United States.

Plus there are highlights from the 1986 Steam Expo at Vancouver, with 21 locomotives from all over Canada and the USA, AND the 1988 'Great Canadian Steam Excursion', doubleheading from Vancouver through mountains and canyons. That's a LOT of steam!

This film was shot on first-generation video equipment so that, even with remastering for this DVD, the picture quality is not quite up to the standards of more modern cameras, but is perfectly acceptable

lmost certainly the highest quality archive railway films you will find; superb images and exceptional dubbed sound. Ton Pruissen’s productions are a time-machine taking you to the golden age of railways. This film contains considerable footage shot on both the pre-war Compagnie du Nord, and the SNCF Région Nord. The pre-war footage was mainly filmed in 1932 by Englishman Jack Stretton-Ward covering a journey from Dover to Paris, and return, on the Fleche d’Or. Footage from 1947, filmed by Dutchman Albert G. Nymeyer, also covers the Gares du Nord and Bastille, plus a visit to Vitry test plant to see a 141R being put through its paces. Some supplementary footage was shot by Wilf Watters, and the final sequences of film shot at Calais in 1965, near the end of steam, were filmed by Hans van Engelen and Ton Pruissen. The historic recordings used in the soundtrack were recorded by H.G. Hesselink. App. 51 mins. Black and white with some colour film in last sequences.Extras: Photo gallery of Nord railway steam locomotives. The film may be played with sound, but no commentary.

Double Darjeeling Delights

The World's Most Famous Narrow Gauge Mountain Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is over 124 years ols and one of the world's very first narrow gauge mountain railways. In 1999 it became the second railway in the world to be listed by UNESCO as a Wold Heritage site. 50 miles (80km) long, it climbs through spectacular scenery to a summit of 7407 feet at Ghum, near Darjeeling. This DVD follows the "toy" train from near Siliguri, on the plains, to Darjeeling and back. It included the famous loops and zig-zags, crosses at the stations (some of them unusual), a loco with a broken steam pipe and lots of daily running. It was filmed in 1977 when the line was entirely steam worked.

This DVD contains the full content of the previously issued VHS production PLUS 62 minutes of previously unreleased material.

All Digital - All Natural Sound

This footage was filmed in January 1997 with a 3-CCD min-DV camera and production has been totally digital. Sound was recorded on location using professional quality microphones. Voice-overs are confined to stills and diagrams. There is no dubbed sound and music heard is ambient sound and from radios of people singing.
