Hong Kong is the first in a series rail based travel guides to cities or regions. An overview of the area, highlighting features of particular interest with emphasiss on helping potential visitors get around, where possible using public transport. In Hong Kong we cover: getting from the airport to the "down town area" using the new Airport Express, navigate our way through the mainly British built MTR (Mass Transit Railway), travel by double deck tramcar through the streets of Hong Kong Island, explore the New Territories using the KCR (Kowloon Canton Railway), sail on a world famous ferry -the Star Ferry, enjoy the views from The Peak, courtesy of the Peak Tramway and view the famous harbour. We also watch, -in amazement- the activities at the KCR freight terminal at Hung Hom, and finally we travel into the Peoples Republic to visit Guangdong (Canton) on the ktt "InterCity" through train. Future developments are not ignored. Ticket to Ride looks at the future of rail transport both in the former colony and at the links that are being forged with China Rail.

Finland is an unknown gem to the rail fan or tourist, modern, 200kph electric high speed trains ply over a complex and well maintained network, while rail-freight use is high by European standards and growing, thanks to a profusion of rail linked facilities and the Russian connection. The film shows Finnish Railways (VR) today, what their plans are for tomorrow, and includes footage at facilities usually out of public view. We look at the capital Helsinki, its Art Deco Central Station, suburban and InterCity rail services, tram system and museum and the two rail connected ports: travel on the S220- Pendolino towards Turku. In Turku, on the Baltic coast to the west, we experience the unreal shunting in a driverless locomotive at the dock. Rail ferry traffic between Sweden and Finland is examined and we take a detailed look at how bogies are changed to allow running on the Finnish "broad gauge", visit STEVECO and VR at the Port of Kotka and watch VR wagons being unloaded and their cargoes being prepared for export. We watch the loading of rail wagons destined for Finnish glass makers, and review inward bound traffic from Russia, from the comfort of VR's traffic control centre. Finland's freight traffic is dominated by two features: Finnish produced exports moving to Finnish ports and Russian exports to Finnish customers or in transit to Finnish ice free ports. We see both! At Vainikkala an armed guard takes us to the point where east and west meet, and spend some time with VR handling Russian locomotives and wagons before they begin their transit of Finland. In central Finland chemical giant Kemira are our hosts and we see ammonium sulphate being made at their rail connected Harjavalta factory. Russian tank wagons in - Finnish tank wagons out! We take a day trip to Tallinn- capital of Estonia, 45 miles across the Baltic by Silja Line where we get a further flavour of the Russian connection, including the departure of the day/night train to Moscow, a quick look at the city and then back to Helsinki on the bridge of Nordic Jet Line high speed Cat.

We travel with the drivers on the 0930 S220 service from Helsinki. The weather is a little overcast but by the time we reach Espoo, ten miles out, we are in bright Nordic sunshine which we enjoy for the rest of our journey to Turku. On the run to the half way point at Jarja/Karis we pass freight and commuter trains, high speed passenger trains pulled by the Finnish derivative of the Swiss LOK 2000 or RE 460 locomotive. Beyond Karis the pace hots up and we sail through beautiful countryside, and take sweeping reverse curves at 200kph. In places the view from the cab is positively breathtaking.

We explore the Netherlands, from the Hook of Holland and Rotterdam in the west to Hengelo in the east, a few kilometres from the German border. We hitch a lift with a special charter train organised by Workgroep 1501 and travel to Dordrecht where we see Dutch Railways, NS, hard at work: double deck passenger trains, Thalys High Speed passenger trains and Europe's heaviest freight train.

Onward, parallel to the route of the new freight only Betuwe line now under construction to 's Hertogenbosch and its ultra modern station. Across flat farm land via Arnhem to Hengelo for a rail open day sponsored by NS. All the fun of the fair, including a steam run by and then back via Utrecht to Rotterdam.

In complete contrast we spend a morning at the CORUS steel works, the largest in the Netherlands, riding their internal rail system and viewing the steel industry at work. A unique rail experience organised by Platform 5

Part 2 continues our journey this time from Tunes to Faro, the Algarvian capital & on to the Spanish border at Vila Real de St Antonio through Olhao & Tavira. Plus a look at Albufeira & Quarteira.

The route east of Tunes is busier than that to the west. It has more of a main line feel, that it does as far as Faro the Algarvian capital. This is a busy and picturesque single track line and passes through holiday country.

The resort towns of Albufeira and Quarteira are to the south as are some of Europe's great golf courses. As Faro is approached, Jonathan Hewat explains the plans for new lines in the area that would make CP more useful to the holiday industry.

We then travel along the Atlantic coast east of Faro through Olgao and on to the charming little town of Tavira. Here we have time to look at this sleepy backwater before continuiing or journey to the Spanish border at Vila Real de St.Antonio.

Filmed in bright February sunshine, this might be one of the last times you can travel on this line with a Portuguese EE "Class 50"!. The electrics are coming!.

Ticket to Ride No. 6: Out & About Lisbon

Ref: FHTTR006D

Price:£19.00

We look at flights to Lisbon, the airport and getting "down town" and explore the city. Lisbon has a modern and efficient metro, we examine it in depth and tell you how to avoid the pitfalls! The tram system is a delightful city icon where the old work horses have been joined by new trams that add a touch of colour and a new transport dimension. The old harbour district is linked to the newer area by no less than three funiculars, each with its very own distinctive character. Lisbon is divided from its southern suburbs, and indeed from all points south, by the river Tagus. The 25th Abril suspension bridge now boasts a rail link on the lower deck. Travel on the new trains and see how they fit into the public transport geography of the city. Oriente is the rail and metro station which serves the Expo site. It is also stunning! Designed by the Spaniard Calatrava this vast gateway is a modern railway cathedral of glass and steel. We have a quick look at the Expo site and enjoy the views from the cable car. We offer some suggestions for attractions beyond the city : along the Estoril suburban rail line to Cascais and then cross country by Stagecoach bus to the beautiful and ancient city of Sintra before returning to Lisbon by rail via the legendary suburb of Benfica, a journey north, on the route of the Porto Alfa, to Vila Franca, the ferry across the Tagus which links Lisbon with the rail network to Beja and the Algarve. We take the ferry and view of the city from this vantage point, and look at travel opportunities from the CP's Barreiro terminus south of the estuary The film is narrated by BBC Radio and Television presenter Jonathan Hewat, and is lavishly illustrated with plans and maps throughout.

en years since the fall of the Berlin wall and the beginning of the huge German re-unification project with money poured into new infrastructure or equipment, now bearing fruit! From Cologne we travel to the Swiss border and across to Austria and the Czech Republic. We look at the Rhein, still the major freight and passenger artery - but not for much longer- and view the trains which pass day and night in this international corridor. On to the financial capital- Frankfurt, the hub of the InterCity passenger business, with a local transport network of breathtaking efficiency. The route of the high speed line which will link Köln and Frankfurt is examined from the air and the ground. On to Ludwigshafen to look at German rail freight, a short hop to Karlsruhe, the city which pioneered the concept of running trams on main lines, and to the beautiful city of Freiburg where passenger and freight traffic stream past on their way to Switzerland. As an indulgence we lunch at the Feldschlossen brewery, just in Switzerland, before heading for the Bodensee. Across holiday Germany to the capital of Bavaria-Munich. Munich is Germany's favourite city and we show you why! Time to look at the international passenger and freight traffic heading for Austria then on to Regensburg and Würzburg. Back through Stuttgart to look at "Star 21" and across to Saarbrücken where we ride the Bombardier trams. You will see the very latest technology, ICT tilting trains, double deck commuter stock, modern freight vehicles and class 101 locomotives plus some old favourites like the class 103, the icon of the German Railways in the 1970s.

First we get you down town from the new Franz-Josef Strauss International airport without paying 40euros for the taxi fare! Then we look at places to stay and suggest a few outside the city-Landshut, Augsberg and Starnberger See. We explore the wonderful city centre, the Olympic Park and Tower, the Nymphenburg Palace, the icon of the beer capital of Europe -the Hofbräuhaus, and the Deutsches Museum transport and technology collection.. Then off to the ancient Danube city of Regensberg for beer and bratwust and a river cruise to the German Parthenon -Walhalla. Ticket to Ride No. 9: ICT Cabride+ Singen to Stuttgart

Ticket to Ride No. 9: ICT Cabride+ Singen to Stuttgart

Ref: FHTTR009D

Price:£21.00

The route between Singen, on the banks of Lake Constance, and Stuttgart, the "capital" of Baden Württemberg, is in fact an international corridor of considerable importance. It links middle Germany with both Zürich and Milan. While not an Alpine route it twists and turns through the foothills of the Black Forest and is consequently quite slow. To reduce journey times on this difficult corridor the DB and the Italian Railways have opted to run "tilting" trains. The FS use a version of their tried and tested "Pendolino" while Siemens developed a "tilting" version of the ICE for the Bundesbahn. The result of this endeavour is the ICT, arguably the most stylish train set in Europe. Our journey is from Singen, (where trains from Zürich or Milan must reverse), to Stuttgart and you will see for yourself how well the ICT takes the curves at 30% higher speeds than conventional trains. To add to the enjoyment the countryside is sublime, at least as far as Horb, and the spring weather bright and clear. We pass the usual assortment of trains that you would expect on route, passenger -including another ICT- and freight, and on the run into Stuttgart we can see the DB’s new S bahn trains, ICE’s, a DB Cargo 143 and a "Cisalpino" Pendolino unit awaiting departure from the Hbf. The film is lightly narrated by Phyllis Watts and includes a technical description of the ICT, as supplied by the manufacturer Siemens, and a quick look at other ICT routes. Filmed in DVC Pro to broadcast standards. This is the fourth of a series of five Rail Films on Germany 2000 from Ticket to Ride.

We undertake a journey through Western Poland to look at both PKP at work and to visit the Wolsztyn Steam Trust. Entry to Poland is via Berlin and then by local train. We make a trip to Leszno on a service steam train and then spend a little time on this important line while the PKP goes about its daily business. Revenue earning freight is still steam hauled around Wolsztyn. We journey with the crew of TY 45 20 with a 1,400 tonne trip freight from the marshalling yard at Zbaszynek. This yard is on the Berlin Poznan Warsaw main line. Then it's on to Poznan for a quick look at the modern freight yard before sampling the Sroda narrow gauge. Back to Poznan to travel on one of the most complete tram systems in the country. Many of the activities shown are part of the Wolsztyn Experience, organised by the Wolsztyn Steam Trust.

We travel on Express Passenger Locomotive (EP08) Poznan to Warsaw. Although we start in Poznan our cab ride begins just outside Konin, for it is not until then that it is light enough to film! Leaving Poznan there are a few inches of snow on the ground, by the time we reach Warsaw we find that the overnight snow has left a two foot covering. During our journey along this main line, arguably the most important in Eastern Europe, we are given an illustrated lesson on Polish signalling, and have a look at other modern Polish Motive power. The last 20km through the Warsaw suburbs is certainly the busiest as the approach to the Central Station is over a six track line. Then over the Wisla to the East Station where the fare paying passengers are discharged. We stay with EP 08 007 for a further few km to the vast depot where we can watch the comings and goings at this 24/7 facility. To complete our day we dash home at the head of PKP's finest- the 160kph EP09- through the Warsaw suburbs and back to Kunto. Filmed in deepest winter we recommend that you wrap up warm before watching! Narrated and illustrated with plans maps and "working" graphics throughout.

Ticket to Ride No. 11: Rhine IC Cabride+ Koblenz to Frankfurt

Ref: FHTTR011D

Price:£21.00

In addition to allowing the viewer to enjoy the scene from the driving seat we tell the story of the route - from both a technical point of view and from that of a potential visitor to the area. Sometimes we take a break from the journey to watch the trains go by. But don’t worry, we pick up the cab ride where we left off! At least four trains an hour in each direction ply this major international route, InterCity, EuroCity and ICTs. Add in local traffic and freight and its a busy trip! We travel south from Koblenz in the driving trailer of train IC 725 that started its run at Dortmund and will conclude its itinerary in Nuremberg. Tail end power is a EuroSprinter derived Class 120. Down the most picturesque section of the river: Boppard, St Goar, Oberwesel before calling at Mainz, where we see work in progress on the NBS that will link Mainz with Cologne. Across the Rhine past the General Motors works at Rüsselsheim and then onto the first section of the Cologne - Frankfurt Neubau strecker to be completed. Then it’s a pause at the striking new airport station before entering the Frankfurt urban area. Across the Main and into the Hauptbahnhof. During the journey we have external shots from the lineside, the river and even a quick look at Cologne from the air! Filmed in June 2000 this is the third of a series of five Rail Films on Germany 2000 from Ticket to Ride.. Filmed in DVC Pro to Broadcast standards and narrated by Wiltshire travel writer Phyllis Watts.

Wolverton Rail note: The first half of the sleeve text for this DVD is a little misleading. I've seen the DVD & it is as described above i.e. IC725 and not IC614. The DVD starts with a description & video clips of the route this train takes from Dortmund to Dusseldorf, Cologne and Bonn before reaching Koblenz. The cab ride proper starts at 4:24 mins into the DVD.

Ticket to Ride No. 12: Out & About - The Romantic Rhine

Ticket to Ride No. 12: Out & About - The Romantic Rhine

Ref: FHTTR012D

Price:£22.00

Quantity:

The Romantic Rhine gorge starts north of Mainz and extends to the confluence with the Mosel at Koblenz. We start at Mainz, view the beautiful cathedral, watch the trams -before making our way to the quayside to catch the KD motor vessel Stolzenfels for our cruise north. From the river we enjoy the best views of this international transport corridor, surrounded by ancient castles, charming riverside towns and, naturally, vineyards.

Between Mainz and Rüdesheim we have the opportunity to explore the KD motor vessel and watch the river traffic on the great river. At the popular wine town of Rüdesheim we meet the rail routes once more- here the east bank "freight route" bisects the town with the railway running down the promenade! View it while you can as a rail bypass is planned!

On the other bank at Bingen the "left rail route" joins us. Both rail routes are with us for the next four hours to Koblenz. We call at the major stops along the way and examine the towns that have been so popular with the British since Queen Victoria's era. The Loreley rocks slip by, and the Ox Tower at Oberwesel- scene of countless railway photographs.

Before we finish our journey we look down upon the rail and river traffic from the heights of Marksberg Castle- you could spend all day here! DB class 101 electrics, the tilting ICT and some old favourites like the DB icon of the Rhine the 103, plus international freight and passenger trains a plenty! In two years time the fast trains will miss the gorge section completely as they speed to Frankfurt on the new NBS -high speed line.

Cardiff, capital city of the principality of Wales, is a vibrant centre whether you are a tourist, sports fan or a rail enthusiast. The city and its hinterland abounds with rail activity: Long distance express passenger trains from First Great Western and Virgin Trains, inter regional services from Wales and West and, naturally local commuter services. Rail Freight is abundant! Much of it is steel traffic to and from the Welsh CORUS facilities and raw materials from the docks. But there is also wagon load and containers from Freightliner's recently opened terminal at Wentloog (SWIFT). Ticket to Ride was at Canton when the first of the EWS Spanish built class 67 left for acceptance trials. By the time the film was completed in spring 2001 these units were a common sight. Newport is an important traffic centre, particularly for the docks. We catch the activity before pressing on to Llanwern and the Severn Tunnel. The English side of the estuary is very different. We visit Bristol Parkway, have a quick look at the work in progress on the new station there and at the recently opened Royal Mail centre, then it's onto Filton Abbey Wood, a station built especially for the new MOD procurement centre of the same name. We look at Avonmouth and the freight that it generates, and Clifton with the famous Brunel suspension bridge dominating the gorge before arriving at Templemeads. This is the major interchange station of the southwest and is currently being expanded. Train operator Thames Trains has joined the action with its new service to Oxford. From Bristol we make an excursion west to the seaside resort of Weston super Mare and call in at the Mecca for German railway modellers ?Model Masters" to see their newly refurbished shop and layout before heading back towards Bristol. On the way we look at the Portishead branch, that is to be re-opened to rail traffic and look at the freight potential that it offers. As a rail based "day out" the old Bristol dock and maritime museum at the floating harbour is worth consideration. It's still rail connected and has a nice collection of pre 1940 wagons on show. Then back to Templemeads which will be the starting point for part two of this rail excursion. Part 2 Bristol to Portsmouth, is by far the the more photogenic section, Bath, the Avon and Wylye Valleys, rural Wiltshire and Hampshire, interrupted by heavy haul at Westbury and the ceaseless activity at Southampton.

Cardiff to Portsmouth. A contemporary documentary on the railway line in Southern England that links two very different cities. We reached Bristol in TTR14-1 and now start just outside at Keynsham, a dormitory town for its larger neighbour, but where once chocolate bars were despatched across the country. Next, a run along the Avon valley to the Georgian city of Bath. Here we look at the city, the old Green Park station and view the trains from the heights of the surrounding hills. We catch a new CORADIA high speed DMU and have a ride in an example. We see who is running the waste business for BANES, and then head east alongside the K&A, the Kennet and Avon canal. Down the Avon valley towards Bradford via Avoncliffe and on to Westbury. This is the centre for the Mendip stone trains, where you will literally see mountains on the move! We visit the famous White Horse for some spectacular views of the west country mainline and the cement works! Heading south, the line is a favourite for steam train operators over the famous Upton Bank and then down the Wylye valley. At Wilton we take to the air for some views of Wilton House and the rail served "Whiting Works" before Salisbury is reached. Again, we get some super aerial views of the station, the SWT maintenance depot and, naturally, the Cathedral- with the tallest spire in the British Isles. On to Southampton where we discuss the container revolution, see at close quarter ships being loaded and cars and vans being moved for Ford. We conclude our tour at Portsmouth; where in addition to travelling on a new Electrostar we pay a visit to the old naval dockyard and HMS Warrior.

Ticket to Ride No. 16-1: GySEV in Austria

Ref: FHTTR016-1D

Price:£24.00

Quantity:

The GySEV is unique! An international railway that avoided the clutches of Communism and the dowdy state imperialism of the post war period to emerge in the 21st century as a modern link between east and west. To say that the GySEV is a private railway is an over simplification, it's major share holders are the governments of the two countries that it links, Austria and Hungary. It has however developed in its own way, borrowing a little from both sides but retaining a distinctive flavour of its own. To add to the charm of the system, the eclectrified main line from Gyor-Sapron-Ebenfurti Vasut (or Ebenfurth in German) along which ply international passenger trains and huge quantities of freight, is crisscrossed by branch lines that seem to belong to a different era. Along the Neusiedl am See "branch" that runs to the east of the Neusiedler See, the "pick up goods train" is alive and well!

The whole area is covered by the film. We start in Vienna at the OBB's unusual triangular terminal -the Sud bahnhof, and then follow the mainline towards the Semmering and Italy. Ebenfurth is where the GySEV meets the OBB and where our adventure begins.....

Welcome to Hungary! This video production follows the fortune of the GySEV, the MÁV and indeed the ÖBB in the west of Hungary; Sopron, Deutschkreutz and Györ and all points between. Hungary is a fascinating venue for a rail film. A country at the crossroads of Europe with a rail system that is modernising fast and yet retains something of the east European “exotic”! The GySEV is no minor player. The company, part owned by Austria, part by Hungary and part by the German port of Hamburg is a major league freight carrier. Sopron is not only a major tourist town it’s also the eastern “hub” for the “Quality Net” Europe wide container network. It’s also the terminal for several RoLa -”piggyback” services from Germany. But the line is best known for its international transit traffic linking Germany with the Balkans, Greece and Turkey. On our journey we have time to look at some of the attractions on the way: The Esterházy Palace, Nagycenk-for the mansion and the narrow gauge steam railway, museum and the Neusiedler See. But it’s the railway that makes the link, we never stray very far from the constant passing of the trains on this main line. By the time we reach Györ we are in MÁV territory, the EuroCity route from Vienna via Hegyeshalom has joined us and the line is now incredibly busy with international freight and passenger working-to say nothing of the MÁV locals and ICs! The Video was filmed by Austrian signal Engineer Gerald Masser, it has been digitally edited by FHP Audio Visual in the UK.

We arrive on a TALGO from France. and watch the transfer from European standard gauge to RENFE broad gauge at Portbou before travelling on to the regional capital. Barcelona has always been a spectacular city, and since the 1992 Olympic games it has a transport system to match! We use it to get the most out of the city, travelling the metro, the funiculars and the cable ways plus the extensive suburban rail system run by RENFE, and the delightful FGC narrow gauge system run by the regional transport authority. We visit Montserrat and enjoy panoramic views of the Catalonian countryside and the railway! We take day trips north and south -to the fortress town of Girona by TALGO, to Blanes along the RENFE Matador Line and to the Roman city of Tarragona 50 miles south along side the Costa Dorada.-the Gold Coast. For the rail enthusiast there is plenty of RENFE's finest to admire: Container trains, unit steel trains and one of the longest load of cars that we will ever encounter! The Euromed TGV "clones" make a great sight running next to some world class bathing beaches. In Barcelona we visit the sights including Montjuic Castle reached by funicular and cable car. The reward is the view from the ramparts over Barcelona's massive port and container terminals.

The name TALGO conjures images of the exotic. The holiday where the journey is nearly as important as the destination. The dash through France and then into Spain, which seems even more foreign. At least today there is no pile out of one train and into another at the border. But at least it’s a border that still seems to matter! See how the magic is done with us, and then enjoy the journey to Figueres, and Girona. This is a great run to make with the driver! It gets better the further south you go. Part two takes you to through the heart of Barcelona, perhaps Spain’s liveliest city, and part three along the sandy beaches of the Costa Daurada. It’s an international route and we pass other TALGOs, and RENFE going about its daily work of moving passengers and freight. Lavishly illustrated, and narrated by Phyllis Watts

In part two of our TALGO journey through Spain, we head for the Catatonian capital Barcelona. It's a busy double track line and we have to compete for track space with other international trains, freight and passenger, plus all the local services you would expect to see around a world class city. We cheat slightly on route, to give you the opportunity for a quick look at Blanes, the holiday resort on the Costa Brava that has been popular with the British for generations. Then it's into Barcelona through the complex series of tunnels that link the network to the north east with that to the south west. We look at all the main stations and show which is best for what. Although the TALGO does not call at Franca station, such a beautiful terminal could not be left out! These diversions are included for your enjoyment, in addition to which the entire route from the cab of the Talgo's 252 locomotive is covered. Lavishly illustrated, and narrated by Phyllis Watts

Its now time to change trains and head down the Costa Daurada with a Madrid bound TALGO. On the way we have a look at Stiges and the ancient city of Tarragona before we conclude this section of the trip at Reus. Most of the trip is in sight of the sea-if you have holidayed on this coast you should be able to pick out your resort! Either way the scenery is tremendous! On the way we pass commuter trains, freight and an “in bound” Euro Med TGV. . The film is lavishly illustrated with maps and plans to help you grasp the geography and to help explain what the future holds for high speed rail travel in Catilonaia. The narration is by Phyllis Watts
