Sheffield was the last city in England to operate trams. Renowed for its cheap fares. frequent services, high maintenance standards and steeply graded routes, the system continued to expand until 1935. Over 300 new four-wheel double-deckers were built between 1928 and 1952 including the famous "Roberts" cars. Ironically as the last of these was being delivered the city implemented its policy of tramway abandonment, the final route closing on 8th.October 1960. Thirt years later modern tramways returned to the streets of Sheffield!

This video recaptures the glory days with an evocative selection of films, many in colour, depicting all types of cars before, during & after the war. Detailed route coverage starts with ECCLESALL-MIDDLEWOOD (abandones 1954), then the 'hilly' lines WALKLEY-INTAKE (1956) and CROOKES-HANDSWORTH (1957); the reserved track along PRINCE OF WALES ROAD (1958), the industrial canyons of BRIGHTSIDE (1958/9), the semi-rural ABBEY LANE (1959), the single track sections en-route to WADSLEY BRIDGE (1959) and finally the town trunk routes MEADOWHEAD-SHEFFIELD LANE TOP and BEAUCHIEF-VULCAN ROAD (1960).
