This journey has only been possible since the beginning of the Winter 1987/88 timetables, with the introduction of the 23 metre long "Super Sprinters" a new service from Cardiff to Birmingham via Worcester and Kidderminster was introduced. We rode in the cab of Class 155 number 155 304 with Senior Inspector Harry Pratt and Inspector Nigel Poutney and Geoff Hughes of the B.R. London Midland Region Public Affairs Department, whom we would like to thank for arranging this journey, which was particularly noteworthy for semaphore signals around Worcester.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above the sounds of the train.

This Cab Ride was recorded on 3rd August 1988 on the 09:05 train from Aberdeen to Inverness, aboard 47515 "Night Mail" (allocated to Old Oak Common!). The weather was reasonable, with rain affecting the run only briefly, at the end of the double line section. The route is that of the Great North of Scotland Railway as far as Keith, and the Highland Railway from there to Inverness. Many fascinating semaphore signals remained, but these were soon going as part of the Inverness re-signalling scheme, and the loco-hauled trains were to be replaced by Sprinters.

We are indebted to Scottish Region Public Affairs, and especially Bob Docherty, for arranging this cab ride, and to Driver Bob Simpson and Inspector Duncan Lachlen for their hospitality and anecdotes. The timetable for the run was as follows:

  • ABERDEEN ....09.05

  • Dyce ....09.14

  • Inverurie ....09.26

  • Insch ... 09.39

  • Huntly ....09.55

  • Keith ....10.12

  • Elgin ....10.34

  • Forres ....10.48

  • Nairn ....11.00

  • INVERNESS arr.11.20

This programme running time is a little over 2 hours.

PLEASE NOTE: Cab Rides have no commentary but original cab conversations are heard. By their nature background noises intrude and picture colours vary in intensity. No warranties are either given or implied by the producers.

Recorded on Wednesday 8th.March 1989, we travel aboard Stratford's "flagship", Class 47 No. 47 581 "Great Eastern" on one of the former through trains over this route. These trains were curtailed at the beginning of the Summer 1989 timetables being replaced by Class 321 units to Cambridge, with a 47-hauled shuttle from there to Kings Lynn (Today, there is a full electric service to Kings Lynn!).

We see the line before electrification commenced beyond Cambridge and the journey features a wonderful array of semphores around Ely.

This Cab Ride was recorded on Monday 10th April 1989 aboard Class 142 Unit No. 142083 on the 11.31 Sheffield to Cleethorpes service, which ran via Gainsborough Central, Kirton Lindsey and Brigg. The latter are on a route for which B.R. had issued closure notices some six months earlier. The route is almost entirely over Great Central metals, and features single, double and quadruple tracks. The latter were in the process of being "de-quadrified". The majority of the route features semaphore signalling and is very heavily used by freight traffic, in particular coal trains.

This cab ride was recorded aboard 86207 "City of Lichfield" on Wednesday 24th May 1989. It is the "missing link" in our West Coast Main Line cab rides and together with Cab Ride No. 5 (Euston to Liverpool) and Cab Ride No. 20 (Preston to Glasgow) gives a. full journey over the WCML from Euston to Glasgow.

The train, the 08.45 Brighton to Glasgow and Edinburgh "Sussex Scot", ran approximately 100 minutes late due to staff difficulties further south, but ran consistently that period of time late against the timetable.

Our thanks go to BR LMR for arranging this cab ride, together with Inspector Brian Clarke and Drivers Roy Willcock and Ian Hogg.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above the sounds of the train.
